PARENTING  IN THE AGE OF ATTENTION SNATCHERS

Picture
Please join the Vernon Area Public Library and CPN as we discuss "Parenting in the Age of Attention Snatchers" by Lucy Jo Palladino on Monday, November 14th from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Vernon Area Library.

Are your kids glued to their screens?  Is it hard for them to stop texting or snap chatting?  Is it hard for them to start homework?  "Parenting in the Age of Attention Snatchers" will help give you the tools to teach children, from toddlers to teens, how to gain control of their technology use.

Homework or other hard to start attention tasks help build brain pathways which are crucial for judgment, emotion self regulation, time and attention management and other executive functions.

As a parent, you can help guide your child to exercise more hard to start attention and to help build these critical brain pathways. In seven straightforward, evidence based steps, Lucy Jo Palladino, PhD, explains how to help kids build awareness, make good choices about their screen time and to help build a better brain.

Heather Blake and CPN members will lead the discussion.  There are a limited number of books available at the library.  You can ask for your copy at the Youth Desk.  If you haven't read the book, please come and join us in the discussion.  Please register for this event at Vernon Area Public Library District .  Additional information can be found at www.communityparentnetwork.org.

Dr. LAURA KASTNER -  Getting to Calm - The Younger Years  and Wise Minded Parenting on Wednesday, Feb 3

Coping with small children age 3-7 and later with youngsters in the tween and teen years challenges every parent.  Parenting either age group requires all sorts of skills that most of parents don't naturally possess.

Help is on the way, thanks to the Community Parent Network (CPN), a committee of the Stevenson High School Foundation. On Wednesday, February 3, 2016, CPN is hosting two presentations for area parents by psychologist, university professor, parent and author, Dr. Laura Kastner.

The author of five parenting books, Dr. Kastner will first speak to parents of younger children age three to seven to discuss her new book, Getting to Calm -- The Younger Years. The event will be at the Royal Melbourne Clubhouse, 4700 Melbourne Drive, Long Grove, IL, from 9:30 to 11 am.

In the evening, Dr. Kastner will present a lecture on her book, Wise Minded Parenting - 7 Essentials for Raising Successful Tweens + Teens. This event will be at Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center in Lincolnshire, from 7 - 9 pm.

Both events are open to all community parents, free of charge. Each event will conclude with a Q&A session and book signing. Lake Forest Book Store will have copies of the book for sale at both events.

Dr. Kastner is clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington and a nationally recognized expert on teen behavior and development. Her unique body of work spans the parenting spectrum from early childhood through the college years. Her advice is solidly grounded in both scientific research and years of clinical experience.

Dr. Kastner's books have been praised as "balm for the stressed parent's mind," "chock full of practical advice," and " a calm and measured antidote to the many books out there spouting parenting trends that lack research and create guilt and anxiety for parents."

Dr. Kastner welcomes questions from the audience, so parents will be able to get answers to their most troubling dilemmas. Kastner presents her books as a doctor, but also as a parent. Her written lectures are a way to connect with parents. "I love interacting with them," she said.  "We are all in this together."
For more information, visit: http//communityparentnetwork.org.  Registration is requested, but not required. To register for the morning program, go to CPN's website page on Getting to Calm - The Early Years.  To register for the evening program, visit the CPN webpage on Wise Minded Parenting.

The Pressured Student: Helping Your Child Find Success in School and Life

9:30 - 11:30 a.m. or 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014
"The Pressured Child" is, in fact, a presentation for "pressured parents" who may have forgotten the realities of school life. 1 - 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014
North Shore Unitarian Church
2100 Half Day Rd, Deerfield (overflow parking available in corporate lot)
This presentation walks teachers and parents through the complex social world of childhood and addresses a number of questions: What do social relationships in school predict about happiness in adult life? What is the normal sequence of child friendships, from the parallel play of the two-year-old to the intimate self-disclosure of the adolescent? Why do cliques form and what are the differences between boy and girl groups? Dr. Thompson will provide suggestions about the management of social problems in school and make the case that while all children yearn for popularity, it is friendship that helps children survive and thrive.
